Hosting Location - what's best

Does it matter if I use a UK Hosting but my site offers services in another country?  Can this be bad for my Rankings?

This is a question which is often the subject of hot debates. It was once believed, that if a website was for example hosted in the UK, but the content of the websites was in fact only relevant to the US that Google would deduct ranking points for not being hosted in the same geographical zone as the business itself.

This may have been true in the past, but it is of lesser cause for concern at present. There has certainly been reason to suspect that it was best to host in the same geographical area as the target market of the site. On the other hand we have seen enough examples of sites ranking high when hosted continents away from the place of business.
